Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by significant mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can affect sleep, energy levels, behavior, judgment, and the ability to think clearly.
Episodes of mood swings may occur rarely or multiple times a year, and while most individuals will experience some emotional symptoms between episodes, some may not experience any.
Types of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is divided into several types, each defined by the pattern of mood fluctuations:
- Bipolar I Disorder: This type is characterized by manic episodes lasting at least seven days or by manic symptoms that are so severe immediate hospital care is needed. Usually, depressive episodes occur as well, typically lasting at least two weeks. The patterns of mixed features can also be possible, which means displaying symptoms of both mania and depression simultaneously.
- Bipolar II Disorder: Defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but not the full-blown manic episodes that are typical of Bipolar I Disorder.
- Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia): A milder form of bipolar disorder, involving periods of hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms lasting for at least two years (one year in children and adolescents); however, the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic requirements for a hypomanic episode and a depressive episode.
- Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorders: This category is used for bipolar disorder symptoms that do not match the three categories above.
Our Approach to Bipolar Disorder Treatment
At Touchstone Trauma Therapy, we utilize a comprehensive approach to treat bipolar disorder, emphasizing the need for a personalized treatment plan that addresses the unique challenges of each type of bipolar disorder. Treatment strategies may include:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
For individuals whose bipolar symptoms may be compounded by past traumatic experiences, EMDR can be particularly beneficial. This therapy helps to process and diminish the emotional impact of traumatic memories that can trigger or worsen mood episodes. By resolving these traumatic experiences, individuals often find their mood stabilizes more consistently, reducing the severity and frequency of bipolar episodes.
Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapies are invaluable for individuals with bipolar disorder, especially when trauma is involved. These therapies focus on the connection between the body and mind, helping clients become more aware of their physical sensations and how their bodies respond to emotional stress.
Techniques like grounding, breathwork, and mindfulness are used to help clients regulate their physiological responses to stress, which can be particularly erratic in bipolar disorder. By integrating somatic practices, individuals can gain better control over their emotional and physical states, leading to improved mood stability and overall well-being.
Psychotherapy
Known as talk therapy, psychotherapy is crucial for managing bipolar disorder. Techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal and social rhythm therapy can help manage symptoms and maintain stability.
Medication Management
While not directly handled by our therapy team, we collaborate closely with healthcare providers to ensure that any medications prescribed are effectively integrated into your treatment plan, supporting your therapy work.
Lifestyle and Routine Adjustments
Establishing a healthy routine is vital for managing bipolar disorder. This includes regulated sleep patterns, regular exercise, and consistent daily schedules that help stabilize mood swings.
Education and Support
Education about bipolar disorder can empower clients and families to understand the condition better, reducing stigma and promoting better-coping strategies. Support groups and family therapy can also be part of the treatment to ensure a supportive environment for recovery.
